Summer Reading Program

We hope that your summer plans include the summer reading program!  This year our theme is “Growing with Books”.  For every 15 minutes that your child reads (or are read to), they will “grow” a leaf on the Kincaid Reading tree.  The student with the most leaves in each grade level will receive a special treat in August.  Reading includes books, magazines, newspapers or any other printed material, just record the time on their reading log.  All children who return their reading log in August will receive a $1 token to the school store. Logs can be downloaded from the Forms page on PTA’s website. For more information, please email Nicole King at summerreading@kincaidpta.org. Early Release Last Two Days of School

Announcement from CCSD:

All Cobb County students will be dismissed early for the final two days of the school year, Wednesday, May 23 and Thursday, May 24. The early release schedule for each academic level is as follows:

• High Schools: ALL Students released at 11:30 a.m. (no regular dismissal at 3:30 p.m.)
• Elementary Schools: Students released at 12:30 p.m. (After-School Programs begin immediately after dismissal)
• Middle Schools: Students released at 1:30 p.m.

Buses will begin their normal routes at the early dismissal times for each level. These early release times have been added to the Cobb County School District master calendar, available to view and sync with your smartphone at

Kincaid Elementary – Dismissal from After-School Activities/Fire Lane Ordinance

The parking laws have changed and parents will not be able to wait in their cars to pick up the kids from any after school activities. They will have to park in the side lot or upper lot and then come to get their child from the front of the school.

The ordinance below only applies from 2:00-3:00pm for our school. At all other times parents will need to stay out of the fire lane.

*Fire Lanes:
On March 13, 2012, the Cobb County Fire Lane Ordinance was amended to include a provision for student pick-up at schools. The ordinance now allows a vehicle to be located in a fire lane for 30 minutes prior to the afternoon school end time and 30 minutes after the school end time, as long as a driver is behind the wheel. Cobb County school end times are available on the Cobb County School District website. The ordinance applies to private schools as well. Stopping or parking a vehicle in a fire lane at any other time is prohibited, unless passengers are actively loading or unloading. Enforcement of this new provision began on April 9, 2012. Fire lanes can be identified by “No Parking Fire Lane” signage and/or curbing that is red in color. Fire lane violations currently result in a fine of $135.00.

PTA General Membership Meeting – May 3

Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend our final PTA General Membership Meeting of the year on Thursday, May 3, 2012. The meeting begins at 6:30pm. Next year’s Executive Committee will be installed during the meeting and we need your vote on a proposed budget amendment. There will also be a performance by Kincaid’s Kindergartners after the meeting, so you won’t want to miss it!

IMPORTANT: Parking in the “red zones”/fire lanes is prohibited – even during after school events. Please do not park in these areas during the PTA meeting. Parking is available in the parking lots, visitor spaces, along the street (right side of streets only, please) and along any yellow painted curb on campus.

Parking Volunteers Needed – May 2

The Kincaid administration has requested two volunteers for Tuesday, May 2nd, from 8:30-9:15am to direct parking during the Kindergarten Tour that morning. Incoming Kindergarten families might not know to park in the upper lot, so our volunteers will need to direct them.

Final Walk on Wednesday – May 2

The final WoW for this school year is coming up on Wednesday, May 2. The weather has been beautiful for walking/riding to school and we are looking forward to another GREAT morning for it on May 2. We will have a special guest at the check-in table to greet Kincaid’s walkers and bike riders, so don’t miss it! Lace up those sneakers and pump up those bike tires for the last blast of WOW! Exceptional Children’s Week: April 23-27

Activities for Exceptional Children Week will include class-directed activities in 3rd-5th grade as well as group activities with classes from Pod A and Kindergarten-2nd grade. There will also be special readings and other surprises during morning announcements the whole week of April 23rd through April 27th. In addition, every student and staff member will receive a wristband that says “Inclusion is Belonging – Kincaid Elementary School”. We are looking forward to Exceptional Children’s Week and celebrating how all our students “fit in.”

Student Banking – April 24

Congratulations to third grader, Laura S., for being one of the national winners in the School Savings Harry Potter DVD Drawing.  Laura, along with 24 other Kincaid Student Bankers, qualified for the drawing by making at least three deposits on four consecutive banking days in February and March.  Be sure to stop by on Tuesday, April 24th to make a deposit at our last banking session before the Summer. Walk on Wednesday – April 25

The weather has been perfect for walking and it looks to stay that way for a while.  We have had a great spring session so far with over 30 walkers per Wednesday.  We will have our last WoW on May 2 so there is still time to walk and win a weekly prize.  Have fun and walk with a friend.  Ask a parent to drop you off at a friend’s house that you can walk from and enjoy the morning.  Hope to see you there and keep up the good Walk.

Spring Cleaning Drive

There’s no better time to stock up on extra spring cleaning supplies for a great cause. Join Kincaid’s Community Outreach Committee in a “Spring Cleaning Drive” April 16th-27th. The cleaning supplies will benefit Our Pals Place, an animal advocate organization with a pet adoption facility and education center, located in Marietta, Georgia. Help give back to make a difference in the lives of homeless pets! Items that are specifically most needed are paper towels and white vinegar. Small Milk Bones are also an added treat for the animals for those that may want to donate something in addition to cleaning products. Lost & Found

With the end of the year right around the corner, we are cleaning out the Lost and Found. If your children are missing any items such as coats, sweatshirts, hats, lunch boxes, etc. please check the Lost and Found as soon as possible. Stopping or parking a vehicle in a fire lane at any other time is prohibited, unless passengers are actively loading or unloading. Enforcement of this new provision began on April 9, 2012. Fire lanes can be identified by “No Parking Fire Lane” signage and/or curbing that is red in color. Fire lane violations currently result in a fine of $135.00.

CRCT Testing – April 18-27

Our third through fifth grade students will be taking the CRCT from Wednesday, April 18 through Friday, April 27. During this time, please limit family visits and activities within the school in order to help promote a quiet testing environment for our students. Teachers are the best source for information on preparing for CRCT. Additional pointers may be found in the April issue of CatTracks. Spring Cleaning Drive

There’s no better time to stock up on extra spring cleaning supplies for a great cause. Join Kincaid’s Community Outreach Committee in a “Spring Cleaning Drive” April 16th-27th. The cleaning supplies will benefit Our Pals Place, an animal advocate organization with a pet adoption facility and education center, located in Marietta, Georgia. Help give back to make a difference in the lives of homeless pets! Items that are specifically most needed are paper towels and white vinegar. Small Milk Bones are also an added treat for the animals for those that may want to donate something in addition to cleaning products. Lost and Found

With the end of the year right around the corner, we are cleaning out the Lost and Found. If your children are missing any items such as coats, sweatshirts, hats, lunch boxes, etc. please check the Lost and Found as soon as possible. All items with names on them will be returned and any unclaimed items will be donated on April 25, 2012. Middle School Transition Night

CALLING ALL 5th GRADERS... Middle school is right around the corner — and we want you to be confident and successful! Kincaid PTA will host a Middle School Transition Forum just for 5th grade students and their parents. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 10, 6-8pm. Students will submit questions in advance and a panel of former Kincaid students representing Daniell, Dodgen, and Simpson will answer them. Come find out what next year will be like. Kincaid Calendar Drawing Contest

The Kincaid Calendar Drawing Contest has begun! Submit an ink or marker drawn picture by May 18th for your chance to be picked for next year’s school calender. The subject of your picture should be related to a specific month or creative letters spelling out a month of the year. Make sure your drawing has thick lines, is on 8.5×11 white paper, has your name, grade and teacher’s name on the back in pencil. Drop your drawings in the Contest Box in the Media Center. PTA General Meeting – Thursday, May 3, 6:30pm

Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend our final PTA General Membership Meeting of the year on Thursday, May 3. The meeting begins at 6:30pm and next year’s Executive Committee will be installed during the meeting. Also, you’ll want to stay around after the meeting to catch a wonderful musical performance by Kincaid’s amazing class of kindergartners.

Your presence is needed at this meeting since we will be voting on a proposed change to Kincaid PTA’s by-laws. The reason for this vote is that National and Georgia PTA’s delegates voted in 2011 to increase their membership dues. In keeping with the dues increases voted in by National and Georgia PTAs, Kincaid PTA will now be presenting a vote to amend our by-laws to increase our local unit (Kincaid PTA) dues beginning next school year.

This is the first rate increase for National PTA in more than ten years. In that time, National PTA has produced tangible results for children-just as it did yesterday, does today, and will do again tomorrow. Kincaid PTA follows the National and Georgia PTA model of advocating for all children. We appreciate everyone’s support of our local unit and hope that you will make plans to attend this very important PTA meeting on Thursday, May 3, 2012. Your voice and your vote are important to Kincaid PTA.
