Earth Day
Considering all the rain we've been getting this
spring, it was decided to get a jump on the official Earth Day
this year and do it a day early at Kincaid. The weather
turned out to be perfect! Activities focused on
cleaning up the school campus and tending to the raised
garden beds near the outdoor classroom. As a result, our
campus is immaculate and the garden area is looking lovely!
We hope the students will stop by during the summer to check on
the tomatoes, lettuce and herbs that they or their classmates
planted. Finally, a big thanks to the Kincaid teachers and
staff as well as the following parents for taking the time to
come out with their gardening gloves and help the students:
Lisa Kelley, Dawn Bornstein, Alene Lee, Stephanie Holden, Amy
Cooney, Kathy Herkert, Michele Rhyne, Heather Held, Jennifer
Hughes, Alicia Reed, April Wood, and Mary Lou Villalba.
Celebrate the Arts Day
Celebration of the
Arts Day was a huge hit-again! Students beat the rhythm to Ritmo
Blu, tapped with Mr. Terrance, and spun the color wheels. They
wrote scripts, learned about brush painting, and acted
dramatically. And that’s not all! This unique day provides
every student at Kincaid with opportunities to SEE, HEAR, and
FEEL arts in action -- all right here at school, and at no
charge. The true value of this event is that it makes art
accessible to everyone -- from the chorus member to the learning
challenged, from the discipline problem to the star student; arts
in education can be the great equalizer, allowing some students
to find that one true passion that lets them shine in a way they
don't normally do at school. It introduces concepts that may not
otherwise have even been considered, and now may become an
integral part of a young person's life.
Thank you to all
of the teachers, staff, volunteers and parents who supported this
year’s Celebration of the Arts Day with their time, efforts
and donations. You made this day a success for our school!
Thank you to PTA volunteers Cathy Barfield, Ann Blauvelt, Dawn
Bornstein, Elise Carter, Irene Cataldo, Amy Cooney, Susan Cronin,
Katie DeCastro, Aneth Frye, Heather Held, Melissa Heller, Jessica
Hood, Cherie Johnson, Alene Lee, Claudine Lusk, Tammy McAninch,
Robyn McArthur, Carolyn Metts, Adrian O’Sullivan, Leslie
Parker, Tiffani Pederson, Tracey Pitts, Jaya Prakash, Alicia
Reed, Dee Swann, Jing Turner, Tom Varner, Mary Lou Villaba,
Heather Voeltner, Beckie Wilson and April Wood.
Special thanks
also go to Ms. Irelan, Mr. Bush, Mr. Furr, Ms. Rausch and Mr.
Henry for all of their support. And finally, thank you to
Subway at Sandy Plains Exchange, Chick-fil-A at Sprayberry Square
and Hoboken Bread & Bagel for their donations of food for a
delicious lunch for artists and teachers. We are so glad
you are part of the Kincaid community.
Community
Outreach
BAKE SALE =
SUCCESS….. A big thank you to the Kincaid Elementary
School community for their generous support of the Great American
Bake Sale at the Spring Fling. A special thank you to the bakers
who generously donate their time and skill to provide the
goodies. We raised approximately $185 for Share Our Strength
which is quite an accomplishment given the prices at the bake
sale did not exceed $1. The money raised will support Share Our
Strength’s after school and summer feeding programs for
children in our local area. If you’d like more information
about Share Our Strength visit strength.org. If you’d like
to get involved in future PTA Community Outreach Committee events
please contact Chairperson Jennifer Modi at
outreach@kincaidpta.org.
Reflections

Attention all
families and students!! Get inspired and encourage your
child to enter the National PTA Reflections Program next year.
There are six categories: Dance, Film, Literature, Music,
Photography and Visual Arts. There is NO limit to how many
categories each child can enter nor is there a limit on how many
entries per category. Kincaid had over 60 students enter
Reflections with 16 District Level winners and 3 State Level
winners!
"Together We
Can" is such a great theme to capture over the summer.
If you are
interested in serving on this committee next year, please contact

Attention
New Kincaid Families
Kincaid
welcomes new families and encourages you to join our Ambassador
Program Kincaid PTA recognizes that starting school or moving to
a new school can be difficult for students and families. The
Ambassador Program is a "get to know each other"
program that pairs new families with experienced Kincaid
families. Our goal is to welcome you and help you with any
questions you have to make your transition to Kincaid easier! For
more information and to sign up click here.
Our
Media Center Needs Us!
Last
year PTA purchased an Accelerated Reader license that allows our
students to have access to every AR test that exists, regardless
of whether our Media Center carries the book. Also, parents have
online access to check the AR levels of books and their student's
progress. This is a great program -- but Mrs. Viars and Mrs. Bond
need help to get the system working to its full potential.
If
you are detail oriented and can come into the Media Center to
work for at least an hour at a time, we have a volunteer job for
you! This job entails looking up a reading level on the online AR
system, checking our Media Center's listing to see if we have
that book, and then documenting the title, author, and other
details as instructed by Mrs. Bond.
That's
it! It's not difficult, but it does require focusing on the
details; details can make all the difference in whether you've
located the exact same book.
Later,
Mrs. Bond will need help pulling books to label with colored dots
& AR information, too.
If
you can help with this assignment, please contact Mrs. Bond at
Cindy.Bond@CobbK12.org.
If
you know of someone who fits our volunteer needs for this
project, please forward this message to them. Remember, attention
to detail is critical for this assignment.
THANK
YOU for supporting this enhanced AR program for our students!
Spring

Congratulations,
Kincaid Families!!! We have now been named a Georgia Clean Air
School ! We are one of only five elementary schools in Cobb
County to have reached this status. We have renewed our “no
idling” commitment, have completed two very successful
school walks and have integrated some awesome lesson plans into
our curriculum. Special thanks to our participating teachers for
supporting our efforts in the classroom. Kudos to Ms. Blackman,
Mrs. Rausch, Mrs. Meyers, and Mrs. Doherty!

PTA Book Fair Committee
A
big THANK YOU to everyone who supported our Spring Book Fair!
Your volunteer efforts and patronage helped to make Book Fair
Diner a huge success. Our volunteers worked very hard and we
would like to thank each and every person who stepped up to fill
all the available slots. Thanks to our school community's
generosity, we were able to add 128 new books to Kincaid’s
media center with more to be purchased before the end of the
year, and each class has more books in their classroom libraries,
too. Keep on reading and we'll see you in the Fall!

Kincaid
students had a mind-blowing experience at Science Day!
Thanks
to your donations and support of the Kincaid PTA, every
student experienced Michael Johnson's, SCIENCE, A TOUCH OF MAGIC,
during
two in-school assemblies on Monday, March 8th.
Students and teachers were WOWed by demonstrations in magnets,
positive air flow, air pressure, sound waves, Newton's law of
gravity, physical reactions, chemical reactions and electricity.
Check out these photos and see what
students have been talking about!
That
same night, students and their families participated in our
annual Science Night. Through hands-on experiments students
explored the science of centripetal
force (Mini
Twister), electrical charge (Jumping
Pepper), chemical reactions (Harry
Potter Potion and Funny
Putty), magnetism (Invisible
Force Moving Car), and physics (Mystery
Architecture) and took-away their own Harry Potter potion,
funny putty, and the skills to invisibly move matchbox cars and
make pepper jump!
Click
on each experiment name for directions and the science behind the
mixing and magic so you can try these experiments at home!
A BIG THANKS to all of our parent and teacher volunteers,
especially Stephanie Holden, who helped pull this night together
for our students.

Kincaid
PTA Needs YOU!
As
per our bylaws, Kincaid PTA elected a Nominating Committee at the
December 2009 General Membership meeting. This committee,
composed of five members and two alternates, is charged with
identifying candidates to fill the 2010-2011 officer positions
for our PTA. If you are interested in serving as an officer next
year and would like more information, please contact Dawn
Bornstein, Nominating Committee Chair, at
Nominations@KincaidPTA.org
or 770/579-6973.
ROBOTICS
Sunday, December
6th, Kincaid’s own Robobots Team placed 2nd
in “Robot Competition” at Regionals against 28 other
teams from Cobb County. This performance qualified them to go on
to Super Regionals on January 9th where they did
exceedingly well, far surpassing their first performance and
showing everyone that they knew what it meant to be a team. The
team is composed of 10 talented fifth grade students with two
alternates: Ana G., Natalia B., Natalia I., Annabelle H., Kate
P., Garrett D., Garret L., Zack S., Tyler G., Johnny P., Shrey
N., and Dylan B.
The
FLL robotics competition is not all about their robot and
“missions” they run, but these children also had to
design a research project and a way to share information found
with others. This year’s theme was “Smart Move”
and their project was based on transportation. The Kincaid team
chose to examine how many children ride the bus versus the car,
and also how many of these children could ride the bus but do
not. They found in counting cars in carline that up ward of 250+
cars go through car line in the morning at Kincaid. The team has
now created a campaign at school through posters and a blog on
the Kincaid website to inform students and parents of the harmful
effects of the amount of cars on the road and what they can do to
help. Please check out their blog at www.cobbk12.org/kincaid.
If you see any of
these 5th grade students, make sure to congratulate
them on this great accomplishment!

Boosterthon
Success!
Boosterthon
was a great success and the results are in! First the PTA would
like to thank all the friends and families who came to support
the children during their run. Your enthusiasm was overwhelming!
We know that families worked hard to get pledges and collect
money and we appreciate that. Kincaid raised $31,814.00 this year
for our children!
This is amazing and everyone should be
proud of the teamwork and pride that Kincaid students showed!
Congratulations to Mr. Glass’s fifth grade class for
collecting the most pledges and to A. Collier, in this class, for
having the highest amount of pledges at Kincaid! Congratulations
also to Ms. Garner’s first grade class for collecting
pledges from the most states!
Because of your generosity,
our main fundraiser was a complete success and we look forward to
providing wonderful programs and opportunities to all Kincaid
students!
Community
Outreach:
VETERANS
DAY CARD DRIVE – A BIG SUCCESS!......WOW!
Kincaid students completed over 400 cards for our nation’s
veterans! That beats last year’s total by more than 100
cards! The cards have been delivered to the VA Medical Center in
Decatur and will be distributed to veterans in the nursing home
and on the medical/surgical floors on Wednesday, November 11th,
in honor of Veterans Day. The PTA Community Outreach Committee
would like to thank the teachers and staff for being so
supportive of this project – we couldn’t have done it
without you. We would also like to thank the Kincaid students for
completing such wonderful cards – they were sincere, funny,
full of life and will be appreciated by all the veterans who
receive them.
Reflections:
Thank
you to all the students, parents and teachers who attended the
Reflections Awards Brunch on October 22nd. Congratulations to all
students who entered materials in the Film, Literature, Music,
Photography and Visual Arts categories. Kincaid had 60 students
who entered 86 entries in this year's contest. Our goal is to
double the amount of students who enter the contest next year!!!
So, be on the lookout for next year's theme sometime in the
spring and get those creative juices flowing! All first and
second place entries will move on to the District level for
further judging. A big thanks to Elise Carter for doing a
fabulous job with the food and decorations. We'd also like to
thank Mr. Henry for his help getting everything ready. And, a
huge thank you goes out to the entire Reflections TEAM: Sean
Bolt, Pam Kulpa, Valerie Harris, Kris Kell, Carolyn Metts and
Patsy Rauch. There still time to submit theme ideas for the
2010-2011 Reflections Theme. Deadline is Friday, October 30th.

Hands on
Atlanta Day at Kincaid!
On
Saturday, October 3, the grounds at Kincaid Elementary seemed to
be magically transformed! But it wasn’t magic. It was about
70+ hard-working people, including Kincaid families, staff, and
IBM volunteers who dedicated their Saturday morning to making
Kincaid a better place. This collaboration between Kim Cook-Boyd
from IBM, Henry Landers, Kincaid Facilities Manager, and Dawn
Bornstein, Kincaid PTA Environmental Committee, made for a highly
successful day. Some of the projects completed include: removing
the old fence along Kincaid Road, planting camellias and
mulching; adapting the outdoor classroom by the gardens to
accommodate wheelchairs; clearing, mulching and planting
throughout the front areas and the main building; weeding and
planting the Kincaid garden areas, and trash pick up. We would
like to thank our IBM Partners in Education, the Kincaid
families, teachers and staff members who volunteered to help make
our school beautiful! Everyone attending, working, or visiting
Kincaid can enjoy the beauty of the school grounds and feel pride
for this wonderful community school!

International
Walk To School Day:
Thanks
for being Cool and Walking to School! The Kincaid PTA
Environmental Education Committee would like to thank all the
students, parents, teachers, and staff members that helped make
our participation in International Walk to School Day a big
success. Although the morning of Oct. 7th was quite soggy, our
walkers turned out in record numbers. 40+ participating students
and teachers passed through our Welcome Station! Way to go! Your
dedication to a healthy and environmentally friendly lifestyle is
to be commended. Thanks also to our bus riders and carpoolers for
“riding there for cleaner air”! We are so proud of
all of you! Kincaid’s commitment to environmental
awareness, advocacy and action is leading the way for others to
follow. Thanks again and be on the look out for more walking fun
to come in the spring!!

Reduce, Reuse
Recycle!
Do
you know how much trash you throw away each day? If you are like
an average American, it’s 4.6 pounds per person. To educate
Americans on the topic of recycling and to encourage them to act,
the National Recycling Coalition designated November 14, 2009 as
America Recycles Day.
Here
are a few ideas to teach your child that your family can make a
difference:
Take the pledge on the website:
http://www.nrc-recycle.org/takethepledge.aspx
Use both sides of all paper, including homework
assignments, and then recycle.
Contact your trash company
about their recycling services.
Check out the Georgia
Recycling Coalition recycling locations for batteries,
electronics, and just about any household item:
environment@kincaidpta.org
to help with recycling efforts at Kincaid. We are always looking
to benefit our students, school and community through expanding
our recycling program.
Get started recycling today and
make your family a part of the solution!
